The 4 Key Factors of the CCRC Decision Process

Dec 29, 2021

Making a choice about a move into Residential Living involves a number of key aspects, and like any big decision, there’s always a starting point. A significant factor in this decision-making process is moving to a community where you can live your desired lifestyle.

“Our community allows seniors to live the way they want and the way they deserve,” says Barbara A. Keller, Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Peter Becker Community. “Residents often find that their life plan needs are met by a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) with a full continuum of care types ranging from the short- to the more long-term.”

Here’s an exploration of the four most important factors to consider when thinking about moving to a CCRC. Use these to help you in your consideration phase. Learning about available options can help you approach a move into Residential Living at your own pace.

Lifestyle and Amenities

When planning a move to a CCRC, learning about their services and amenities should be among your first priorities. It’s important that your community can provide you with stimulation and plenty of things to do

Before beginning your search, decide which of your interests and hobbies you’ll want at your CCRC of choice. Making sure that a community fits your preferences is key to discovering the location for you.

Also consider the dining options, floor plans, location, and how the CCRC residents feel about their own community.

Health Care Services

Feeling good about your future lifestyle and amenities is important. Equally so for the health care services a community offers. The fact is that adults over the age of 65 have a 70% chance of needing advanced health care services for an average of at least two years. You can account for this and simplify your plan for the future by moving to a community that provides a full continuum of care should you need it.

This is what is offered by a CCRC such as Peter Becker Community.

Financial Considerations

By entering a CCRC, you can maintain your current lifestyle and gain access to the community’s wide array of amenities, all while paying a single monthly fee that covers all your expenses.

You must consider not only the entry fee but also the monthly cost. Study a community’s contract types closely. There are multiple choices when it comes to an entry fee, which are affected by the contract type and any care services you might need down the road. More on that is featured below.

Contract Types

In CCRCs, there are three main contract types. Consult with the CCRC’s representatives to determine which contract type is offered at the community and if it’s right for your needs. On-site care services mean you never have to go far to receive care.

  • Type C
Fee-for-Service contracts, also known as Type C contracts, ask for the lowest monthly rates and entrance fees. Additional on-site health care services such as memory care, rehabilitation or skilled nursing care are often offered and paid for at the time of service. With a Type C contract, you can be confident that a plan is in place to provide for your future care needs.
  • Type B
In a Residential Living setting, Type B contracts ask for a monthly service fee that stays the same unless you need any higher levels of care. If you need such care, your health care services will be available at a reduced rate. Type B contracts are also known as Modified Life Care plans.
  • Type A
Like Types B and C, the fee for Type A plans pays residents’ utilities, funding services and amenities, maintenance, dining, activities and scheduled transportation. Type A contracts are also known as Life Care contracts. For the highest entrance fee of the three contract types, you receive certain long-term care or nursing services at no extra charge. This is in addition to the services mentioned above but does not include the cost of specialized dining options or other services.
