Recognizing the Value of Employee Longevity – 2014 Service Award Recipients
There is a great need in the senior care industry for people with a strong level of dedication and longevity. Long standing employees know the residents and can better cater to their needs. According to Harry McConnell, the Vice President of Human Resources, “Peter Becker Community is honored to have a truly dedicated workforce. It is a real comfort to our members when they see the same smiling faces each day. We think it is very important to recognize and reward employees when they reach service milestones like five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, and thirty years. They deserve the recognition and our residents reap the benefits.” The 2014 Peter Becker Community Service Awards are as follows:

Reach for the Beach Walking Contest
According to the American Heart Association, “Adult Americans spend most of their waking hours at work. Sadly, many of those hours are spent sitting at a desk. This makes them vulnerable to health risks associated with inactivity.”
Peter Becker Community is intent on changing this on campus. For the third year in a row, Peter Becker Community offered a spring contest to incent employees to adopt a daily walking routine. This year’s contest is called “Reach for the Beach”. According to Harry McConnell, Peter Becker Community’s Vice President of Human Resources, “we want to be a fit-friendly employer offering a healthy workplace, and this contest is just one of the ways we are making that happen.”
More that 70 employees signed up for the contest, and 55 reached the goal. Employees had 3 months to walk 175 miles: the distance to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Each employee who accomplished this goal (tracked by a personal pedometer) in the time frame (April 1 – June 30) was entered into a drawing to win the Grand Prize of a $500 gift certificate to a Rehoboth Beach Bed & Breakfast. There were lots of other great prizes being offered including gift certificates, tickets to sporting events, etc.
The winner Fardousa Abdillahi from the Housekeeping and Laundry Department has served the community for more than 9 years. The drawing took place at the annual employee meeting held on July 16, 2014. Last year’s winner, Bonnie Clemmer picked Fardousa’s name.
The “Reach for the Beach” is just one part of the wellness initiatives going on at Peter Becker Community, an employer who has recognized that the health of its staff reflects back to the health of the organization. It also offers yoga classes, Weight Watchers meetings, smoking cessation, healthy meals, periodic massages, memberships to the on-campus YMCA and more.
